The cells making up your body are differentiated so they are each tailored to perform specific functions. You have skin cells, blood cells, liver cells, lunch cells, cheek cells, muscle cells, and so on. At the same time, all these cells work together. In a healthy organism, one kind of cell doesn't try to take over another cell, or otherwise influence it about doing the job for which it's specialized.
In everyday life, everyone is different and specialized. In a healthy community, functioning groups are those whose individuals do their own thing to contribute to the group without interfering in others abilities or desires to contribute, as well. The whole is always greater than the simple sum of the parts. The individual recognized that his or her own survival relies upon the group's survival, and so behaved that way!
