What makes you happy? Is it what you get? There’s no doubt that working hard to get something and then finally getting it can lead to lots of satisfaction—at least for a while. Getting what you want can be a dandy trigger for generating a happy feeling.
But now explore a little further. Think of the different times you’ve been happy. What was the cause of your being happy in each instance? Was the happiness always because you got what you wanted, or were there other reasons? Have you ever been happy just because it’s a beautiful day out? Have you ever been happy even though the weather is nasty outside? Have you ever been happy for no reason at all? What does that tell you about the nature of happiness? It may be triggered by outside events, but not necessarily.
The actual happiness feelings happen independently of the trigger.
If you can feel happy independent of the events going on around you (at least in one or two rare incidents), doesn’t that mean it’s something you generate for yourself? Isn’t it something you can begin bringing to life rather than trying to take from life?
