In fact, science is just a story. That’s not to diminish the importance of science. Science correlates our real experience to a self-consistent set of theories awfully closely. But science is still just a story.
In addition, scientific theories are designed to fail by nature eventually. As new data emerges, theories change to accommodate new facts. The scientific enterprise is always creating new theories to supplant older theories as they become invalid (usually due to finding new evidence). In a sense, science IS fiction.
