This was the title of a very early biography about Steve Jobs-- "The Journey is the Reward" by Jeffrey S. Young. Wanting something very much is a great way to get started on a journey. Even getting what you work very hard for is often a good thing.
Sure, it’s nice to get something cool after working hard, but look back and ask yourself if the journey wasn’t the most valuable thing.
When the Apollo 11 splashed down, the were celebrated with parades and other accolades. But at least one of them turned to alcohol to salve the emptiness he was feeling after the luster of their accomplishment wore off. Having accomplished something like that is big. At the same time, moving on to accomplish the next thing is equally important!
As Spock said in the Star Trek episode Amok Time: "After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true."
