Living in this Western culture, we place so much emphasis on ownership. But ownership of any item is simply a tacit convention. “Ownership” is an agreement (and in some cases a disagreement) we can make with each other about a relationship between one thing (you) and another thing (an item).
Do you think this idea could also be applied to the relationship between your body and soul? And who is this "you" that seems to own a body and soul, anyway?
This idea is not meant to dispel social conventions—for they are very necessary for us to for daily operation as a society. However, there is a much larger truth going on here. From a certain perspective, the idea of “owning something” is fiction (that is, it's made up).
If the notion of “owning things” is fabricated, what does it mean to say, “I own a soul”? What does it mean to say, “my head hurts” or “I have this feeling”?
