It may seem your moods come and go capriciously. But you don’t have to let them go on autopilot. You can direct your focus and your moods. While you may not direct them in one single fell swoop, you can direct them gradually and with practice—very like digging a trench to redirect a stream of water. And once you do that, you probably realize that it’s helpful to feel good even when things aren’t going your way.
You might think trying to be happy in the face of adversity seems Pollyannaish. But remember—when you can feel good even though something objectionable is happening, you’ll be in a much better state to handle it.
